What does “Chureito” mean?

The name “Chureito” literally means “the tower to honor loyal souls.”

Today, it stands not only as a famous photo spot for its stunning view of Mt. Fuji but also as a beautiful bridge between history and the peaceful scenery we enjoy today.

A small tip
Chureito Pagoda looks like an ancient structure, but it’s actually quite modern. It was originally established in 1958 as a peace memorial dedicated to local citizens who died in wars, including World War II. The pagoda you see today was constructed shortly after, starting in 1959 and completed 1962, a 3 years later.

Conquer the 398 Steps: The Sakuya-hime Stairs

To reach that observation deck, you’ll need to climb 398 steps. It’s a bit of a workout, but the view of the city and the mountain opening up behind you is worth every step. No need to rush!

These are known as the Sakuya-hime Stairs, named after the goddess of Mount Fuji.

650 Cherry Blossoms

Arakurayama Sengen Park has roughly 650 cherry trees. When they are in full bloom, the combination of the red pagoda, the pink petals, and the snow-capped Fuji is breathtaking.

Heads up: During peak season, the crowds are intense. The roads get so congested that traffic often comes to a standstill. If you are driving, be prepared for a long wait, or better yet, try to arrive as early as possible!

Travel Info for Your Visit

Parking Fees: If you come by car, expect to pay between 1,000 to 1,500 yen for parking.

Nearest Station: Shimoyoshida Station (下吉田駅 in Kanji). It’s a nice walk from the station through our local streets to the park entrance.
