Tired of the Kawaguchiko Crowds? Try Mt. Fuji Spots in Lake Yamanaka Instead

If you’ve recently searched for “Mt. Fuji viewpoints,” you’ve probably come across countless stunning photos of Lake Kawaguchiko. What those photos often don’t show, however, is the reality on the ground: the crowds.
As one of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations, Lake Kawaguchiko is frequently busy with tour buses and large groups of visitors. If you’re hoping to enjoy a quiet, unhurried moment with Mt. Fuji, it can sometimes feel overwhelming.
But there’s a quieter alternative—just a short drive away.
Lake Yamanaka (Yamanakako / 山中湖), the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes, offers a much more relaxed and spacious atmosphere. Despite its size, it remains noticeably less crowded, and the sense of openness here makes Mt. Fuji feel even more powerful and awe-inspiring.
Why Lake Yamanaka Has Fewer Tourists:
Lake Yamanaka is slightly farther from major train stations and popular sightseeing routes, which makes it less convenient to visit without a car. Because of this, many travelers choose easier-to-access spots like Lake Kawaguchiko, leaving Lake Yamanaka quieter and less crowded, especially on weekdays.

Yamanakako Shinsui Park

Yamanakako Shinsui Park is a peaceful lakeside park with wide open views of Mt. Fuji across Lake Yamanaka. It’s a great place for a quiet walk, especially at sunrise when the reflection of the mountain is at its best. Compared to Lake Kawaguchiko, it’s much less crowded.
Myojinoyama Panorama Dai

Myojinoyama Panorama Dai is a scenic viewpoint located on a hill overlooking Lake Yamanaka, offering sweeping views of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding area. It can only be accessed by car, and the elevated position allows visitors to look down over the landscape and enjoy a quieter, more secluded atmosphere than the lakeside spots.
If you want to explore the area at your own pace, I also offer private car tours around Lake Yamanaka through KOKO Journey!
