What is Tenku no Torii?

Tenku no Torii (the “Torii Gate in the Sky”) is perched on a hillside above Lake Kawaguchiko, offering a picture-perfect view of Mt. Fuji framed by a traditional Japanese torii gate.

This spot has become popular on Instagram and travel blogs. If you’re visiting the Fuji Five Lakes area, this is one of those “Good” locations.

You can either drive up (there is only few parking available nearby), or hike up a mountain to reach the site.
Please note that a small cooperation fee is required to enter the torii area. It it currently 200 yen (cash only).

A Quick Note (Good to Know Before You Go)

There’s one small detail that many visitors don’t realize at first.

This location is actually on private land, and the torii itself was set up mainly as a photo spot rather than a traditional shrine with deep historical roots.

So while it looks very authentic, the purpose is a bit different. It’s designed as Mt. Fuji shot.

Some visitors are surprised by this, especially if they expect a typical shrine experience.
