Naturally Vegan Japanese Foods
Beyond restaurants, Japan has plenty of everyday foods that are naturally vegan or easy to make vegan:
Tofu(豆腐)
A classic in Japanese cuisine — chilled, boiled, or lightly fried. Completely plant-based and found everywhere.
Misoshiru / Miso soup(味噌汁)
Ask for kombu dashi instead of fish-based dashi, and it becomes a vegan-friendly soup with tofu, veggies, or wakame.
Natto(納豆)
Fermented soybeans served over rice. Nutritious, affordable, and available in most convenience stores.
Soba / Udon
The noodles are plant-based. Ask for a broth made with kombu dashi or enjoy them cold with a simple dipping sauce.
Onigiri(おにぎり)
Rice balls that can be vegan depending on the filling — pick ume (plum), kombu, or plain salted rice.
Tsukemono(漬物)
Japanese pickles like cucumber, daikon, or eggplant. Usually made with salt or rice bran, so they’re typically vegan.
